iOS 18.2 doubles storage needs for Apple Intelligence - and users aren't thrilled

In context: When Apple Intelligence launched last year with iOS 18.1, the company announced a 4GB storage requirement for its AI-powered features, including Visual Intelligence and Siri with ChatGPT integration. At the time, the requirement seemed reasonable, given that much of the processing occurs locally on the device to prioritize user privacy.

Fast forward to last month's release of iOS 18.2, and the storage requirement for Apple Intelligence has jumped to a staggering 7GB of free space per device, according to Apple's website. That's nearly double the original requirement in just a few months.

The likely reason? All the shiny new AI features packed into iOS 18.2. These include the Genmoji custom emoji creator, an AI image generator called Playground, the Visual Intelligence feature for identifying objects and places, and, of course, ChatGPT for text composition alongside a significantly smarter Siri.

These features are undoubtedly useful for many, but the 7GB storage requirement is a significant hurdle – especially for users who want to enable Apple Intelligence across multiple devices like an iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Together, that adds up to a hefty 21GB of storage.

The frustrating part is the lack of flexibility. Users can't pick and choose which AI features to enable, leaving them with limited options: upgrade to a higher storage tier when buying new hardware, pay for additional iCloud storage, or forgo Apple Intelligence altogether.

Unfortunately, relief doesn't appear to be on the horizon. While iOS 18.3 doesn't introduce major new AI capabilities, Apple has announced bigger Siri upgrades for iOS 18.4 in April, which could push the storage requirements even higher.

Apple defends its approach by emphasizing the advantages of on-device AI processing, including faster performance, improved responsiveness, and enhanced privacy protection compared to cloud-based models. However, these benefits come at the cost of consuming space that could otherwise store photos, videos, apps, or files.

For those struggling with storage limitations, Apple does offer an opt-out. You can completely disable Apple Intelligence by navigating to Settings > Apple Intelligence.

This explains Apple’s recent increase of base storage from 64 to 128 GB.

iOS 17 already took 18GB. Add another 7 and that 64 is running out quickly.

I still have iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB.
I skipped 15 and 16 because they refused to give us 2TB.
I use my phone for 4K videos for Youtube and I refuse to upgrade till they add more storage. I didn't miss out on Apple AI (which wasn't ready) not did I miss out on the camera button (which needs to be refined). Glad I waited!

Also disappointed they didn't have air pod pro 3rd gen ready yet either.

Considering iPhone shoots high res video and takes huge pictures, the storage for the base models should be no less than 512GB and even that's small-ish.

This may not have been a problem if phones have more storage or expandable storage. However, to maximize their profits, they chose to give us meager amount of storage and RAM, so that they can charge you another 200 to 300 bucks for a slightly higher amount of storage.

Anyone who choses to be locked into Apple's nonsense deserves what they're getting. You can complain about it, but nobody forced you to buy an Apple product. Apple has been doing this for many years, so it is a surprise to no one.

yep especially when they claim to be ahead of the game with tech... https://www.sdcard.org/press/though...lasses-and-next-level-performance-features-2/

Apple does not want you to have an easy way to get your stuff on your own devices unless u pay for space on the cloud. google has been moving this direction as well.

I disabled all apple intelligence on my iPhone 16....! Better do extra steps manually on the phone, and be more secure....!

No - they can't.

Show me you shooting a 5 hour 4K video and then finalizing that video on your Android phone to an SD card.
I never said android could do it. what are you talking about. my point is sd cards can do it...

besides this point noone is truly editing good videos ina really good way on their phones if you think you are then you really have lost it.

That's enough. Conversation over.

Have you considered removing the video from your phone after you upload? ;)

I can't imagine using my iPhone for my YT videos. I use so many SD cards for my videos.

I have been to Bali, Dubai, Singapore, Seychelles, Maldives and a number of other places. I need the storage space so I can make YT videos of the business class flight experience and the vacation experience. My videos tend to be 4-6 hours long. With 2TB I'll be able to make them that long comfortably.

How many people actually utilize all this new crap? emoji creator?
.05% I bet...
Siri seems actually somewhat useful now in that processes don't take forever to complete. For the first time ever, I actually have Siri enabled. I do like the notification summaries even with the faults that come along with limited text characters space on the screen. Everything else is a complete waste of storage space for me.
