What just happened? With the start of CES 2025 now just days away, companies are rushing to reveal their new products ahead of the world's biggest consumer electronics event. Three tech giants have just unveiled 27-inch 4K OLED 240Hz monitors, and at least two support DisplayPort 2.1a.

Asus, Samsung, and MSI have announced their claims for producing the world's first 27-inch 4K OLED 240Hz monitors, all using Samsung's 4th-generation QD-OLED panels.

The Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM, which has a screen size of 26.5 inches, boasts a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, HDR10 and Dolby Vision support, a 0.03ms response time, VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black compliance, and more.

MSI's monitor is the MSI MPG 272URX QD-OLED. Its spec list shares many similarities to Asus' monitor, while also including support for VRR and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). It's DisplayHDR 400 True Black compliant and ClearMR 13000 certified – the latter is the highest tier for the metric that compares the ratio of clear pixels to blurry pixels during motion. It offers a 166PPI display, but there's no Dolby Vision HDR support.

The final monitor is Samsung's Odyssey OLED G8. Like the others, it boasts VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 and G-Sync/FreeSync Premium Pro compatibility, along with 165 PPI on its screen.

Both new monitors from Asus and MSI include DisplayPort 2.1a (UHBR20). The standard offers 80Gbps bandwidth, allowing users to enjoy 4K at 240Hz without the need for Display Stream Compression (DSC). Samsung doesn't say anything about DisplayPort 2.1a in its release, but it's fair to assume that it'll be there.

The monitors also support HDMI 2.1; it was recently confirmed that HDMI 2.2 will be unveiled at CES, but it'll be a long time before that standard appears in monitors and consumer televisions.

The monitors come with advanced OLED protections, such as MSI OLED care 2.0 and Asus OLED care Pro. Those two companies also offer a three-year warranty that includes burn-in protection. Samsung has yet to confirm its warranty specifics.

Last week we heard that LG plans to unveil new UltraGear OLED monitors at CES, including a 45-inch 5K2K bendable model with dual-mode functionality. Asrock also has an upcoming dual-mode monitor with built-in Wi-Fi 7 antennas.

4k on a 27 inch - I’d say that’s pretty overkill. 1440p would be enough pixel density to not see individual pixels on such a small screen

Have you not used a 1440p 27inch screen yet? It’s kinda become the norm over 24 inch 1080p screens in recent years.

You absolutely can see the pixels when sat at a normal distance, 4K must look amazing.

27 inch is too small for me. though I've used a 40 inch and thought it was too big. 34 inch is a good fit for me. I'd like to try a 37 inch, but those are hard to come by. Refresh is less important to me than having good colors and a big screen and higher resolution. I'm fine with gaming at 60 hz. I probably won't replace my monitor unless it breaks and is not fixable. They should be able to sell a lot of these if they advertise it in fortnight and roblox though. If you're favorite youtuber says you need a high refresh to be good at gaming, they will sell like hotcakes.

I think my 3440x1440 ultrawide is more than enough resolution for the types of gpu's I'm eyeing up. It seems nvidia is being particularly stingy with their new gpu's vram. possibly to push people towards the higher end ones.
I couldn't go back to a 16x9 monitor anyway. It would feel like im wearing blinkers.

I have indeed. A 1440p Qled config at 27 inch looks awesome.
Currently running a 4k OLED at 32 inch - which is a much better format for 4k. I had a 1440 32 inch Qled ips panel before it - and that also looked surprisingly good - but of course, nothing beats the quality of Oled there.
I saw that suddenly came out as a low level flex ..but I’m totally fine with that :p

This. Even 1080p looks better at 13 inch than 27 inch 1440p.

These are the bunch of monitors I've been waiting for. Time to relegate my Gigabyte M27U as secondary monitor. It's good, other than it sucks at black stuff. Worse than my trusty AOC 24G2 on its side.
Using 150% scaling to roughly match the 1080p displays on the side. I think I will need 125% scaling when I go double 4K, and that's still more than 1440p.
Still baffled that there are no announced pricing and launch date yet, even though it's pretty much an open secret that it will be out on 2025Q1.

Probably hot take: I can easily spot aliases on Forza Horizon 5 and a few other games @4K native without AA on the M27U without trying hard (also, TAA sucks), so 4K at 27inch is definitely not overkill, or there won't be such a sizable demand on this form factor.

Unfortunately I couldn’t go anything under 32” these days, no matter what the resolution or refresh rate was… yes, even though I would have to pay a lot more for it.

27” holds no interest for me these days.

I gave my last lot of 27” monitors away .. low refresh ones though.

That’s due to non-native 4k textures and low polygon models tbh. Most games run as low as 1024x1024x textures for most assets still. Upscaled to 4k it’s still clearly visible. With 4k textures downscaled to 1440p, you get an almost pristine picture (better at native 4k of course, but still)

None of them being HDR1000 compliant is a bit surprising to me. My now year-old 4k MiniLED monitor is and it looks great in native HDR supported games. Cyberpunk's HUD alone is a night and day difference in color.

I had to give my oled to my daughter to use because it wasn't bright enough in the office during the daytime. With the sun streaming in I need a brighter picture. The oldest just don't have what it takes.

The older ones does indeed have that issue. The 2024 models have much brighter screens though - something to consider if you want to go with an oled again :)

There's no longer a need with the improvements to the lighting on led panels. Plus the led panels are still far brighter than the OLED ones even now.
