What just happened? Elon Musk is no longer just the richest person in the world, he's now the richest person in the world by a very wide margin. Tesla's boss net worth has reached $447 billion, making him the first person in history to surpass the $400 billion milestone.

According to Bloomberg's Billionaires Index, Musk's net worth has increased an incredible $218 billion this year. The jump is almost as high as second-place Jeff Bezos' and third-place Mark Zuckerberg's total worth: $249 billion and $224 billion, respectively.

Musk's fortune has been boosted since the US election in November, rising 77%. That includes a single-day rise of $62.8 billion after SpaceX and its investors agreed to purchase as much as $1.25 billion of insider shares, valuing the space exploration firm at about $350 billion.

Being Tesla's largest individual shareholder means that Musk has also benefitted from the EV's stock price reaching an all-time high of $424.77 this week. It's believed Musk's influence over the Trump administration will benefit Tesla, which has seen its stock increase 65% since the president beat Harris. The close relationship with Trump is expected to help Musk's other companies, too.

Artificial intelligence startup xAI, another one of Musk's six companies, has also been adding to his net worth. The company told investors it raised $5 billion in a funding round valuing it at $50 billion last month, more than doubling its value compared to a few months earlier, writes The Wall Street Journal.

Earlier this month, Delaware judge Kathaleen McCormick upheld her original ruling that denied Musk his multibillion-dollar compensation package from Tesla.

The judge called the original $56 billion amount "excessive." Based on the price of Tesla shares, the package would now be worth as much as $120 billion. Tesla said it intends to appeal the decision.

Interestingly, it appears that Bloomberg includes the Tesla pay package in its valuation of Musk. But even without it, he's still the richest person in the world by a long way.

SpaceX's Starlink service has made headlines more than once this week. First came reports that a Ukrainian-American nonprofit organization has submitted two filings to the FCC objecting to the company's proposal to put another 22,488 satellites into low-Earth orbit. It cites Musk's alleged ties to Russia and the environmental impact among its reasons for opposing the plans.

Elsewhere, police in India have sent a legal demand to Starlink asking it to reveal the buyer of a Starlink Mini device that was found on a boat carrying $4.2 billion worth of methamphetamine.

With any luck, maybe the world will figure out that "wealth" is not as important as everyone dreams that it is. Probably not, however. The world seems to like doing the same things over and over and expecting different results even though those results never materialize. IMO.

Musk’s net worth increasing by $218 billion in a year is absurd—he’s basically earning a medium-sized country’s GDP by just existing.

This is what happens when your net worth is tied extremely closely to the value of companies that disrupt and dominate. SpaceX essentially eradicated Russian commercial launch, and has steamrolled almost everywhere else.

No idea what Tesla is doing.

Tesla is about to erase Taxi companies and Uber/Lyft. Or at least will in the next 5 years.

Are they about to get ride of delivery drivers? I can't wait for people to stop running into restaurants and cutting in line just to shove their phone in someones face to ask for an order because they can't even speak English. Saw one driver get kicked out of a taco bell for pushing a lady in line and he wasn't able to complete the order. They didn't give him the food.

I also go places to pick up food. Namely, my food. I stopped using Uber eats because it's now uber expensive. The other side to it is that about 20% of the time, the driver would steal my food and Uber wouldn't refund my money.

Just wait, in 20 years time, Optimus will be so advanced that it’ll be just as likely of eating your food before it gets to you.

my net worth is up 1.5 million this year thanks to investing in Tesla and Nvidia. have others but these two stocks are insane. I'm so buying RTX 5090 with my gains

I'm sure it'll only increase even more that he'll just be getting all the government contracts sent his way. Surely he wouldn't have any conflicts of interest or anything.

You might want to listen to his competition's take on this. Bezos has made his position clear and he is not fearful like you are.

It’s pretty impressive that Gates and Balmer total $320. Nowadays it’s kind of uncommon for starter companies to not screw each other over. If one of them had, they’d be second.

It would be interesting if we could search and find out what people's opinion on Musk was, BEFORE he saddle up with Trump. I remember reading a lot of opinions that Musk was a good guy, but now since he sided up with Trump, people on tech blogs, news sites seem to have a negative opinion.
TDS?

TDS? I didn't figure you for the recorded message on a loop type.
I could easily argue Biden takes every bit of a hit as trump does. Should we put a name to how many of those accusations were lies? Or just give it a blanket coverage name?

But anyway, the disconnect between personal wealth and company performance never ceases to amaze.
Tesla sales are continuing to fall at a huge rate. While the industry during November 2024 saw a 1.3% increase from last month and a 10.1% increase from this time last year, Tesla November sales are down 35% from November 2023 and have been falling.

The only thing Tesla related selling well are the bumper stickers Tesla owners are putting on their cars that say "I bought this before Musk sold his soul"
The other companies are maintaining, but the cars are taking a hard hit.

I agree, but it's not one-sided.
Before Musk did his trump pucker, the right saw him as the evil that brought the EV to the forefront. They despised him, and one of the biggest celebrations for MAGAs in the last few years was when Texas made their anti EV laws and regs.
