2024 was the hottest year on record, surpassing the critical 1.5°C threshold

Why it matters: The warnings have proved sadly accurate: 2024 was the hottest year on record, marking the first time that average temperatures exceeded the key target of 1.5C above pre-industrial times. It's a cause for concern, especially as 2023 was also a record hot year.

Data from the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) shows that the average temperature in 2024 was 1.6C higher than in the pre-industrial period of 1850-1900, before humans started burning fossil fuels on large scales. That marks an increase of 0.1C from 2023.

The 2015 Paris Agreement, to which most countries have committed, aims to stop average global temperatures from exceeding 1.5C. While this is the first year above that temperature, it does not breach the Agreement's target, which is measured over a decade or two. However, the C3S said each year in the last decade is one of the ten warmest on record, and the situation looks to be worsening. At this rate, the world could be 2.7C warmer than pre-industrial levels by the end of the century.

More depressing data from C3S included confirmation that July 22, 2024, was the hottest day in recorded history. It also showed that a record 44% of the planet was affected by strong to extreme heat stress on July 10.

"There's now an extremely high likelihood that we will overshoot the long-term average of 1.5C in the Paris agreement limit," Dr Samantha Burgess, deputy director at C3S, said. "These high global temperatures, coupled with record global atmospheric water vapour levels in 2024, meant unprecedented heatwaves and heavy rainfall events, causing misery for millions of people."

C3S director Carlo Buontempo said the warmer temperatures were leading to more extreme climate events, including heatwaves, storms, floods, droughts, and wildfires.

Scientists say rapid swings between dry and wet conditions in Los Angeles in recent years, boosted by climate change, has created a huge amount of tinder-dry vegetation that is fuelling the wildfires in the region, where ten people have been killed and hundreds of homes destroyed.

As reported by Climate Home News, researchers collaborating with the World Weather Attribution (WWA) and Climate Central projects said last month that climate change had intensified 26 of the 29 extreme weather events they studied during 2024.

"The world doesn't need to come up with a magical solution to stop things from getting worse in 2025," said Dr Friederike Otto, at Imperial College London. "We know exactly what we need to do to transition away from fossil fuels, halt deforestation and make societies more resilient."

A more recent addition to global carbon emissions is the rise of data centers, which have seen their numbers increase due to the huge demand for cloud services, generative AI, and data storage. They contribute to 1-2% of global carbon emissions, putting them on par with the aviation industry. While companies are looking at other ways of powering and building these facilities, carbon emissions in 2024 are still expected to have set a new record high.

OMG is climate hysteria still alive?

"Hottest year on record" sounds kinda scary, until you realize the "record" is about 50 years long, and in geological terms that's indistinguishable from zero.
And how is 1.5°C threshold "critical"?

Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't there a recent article a few months ago about global warming prediction why aliens left earth or left a different planet? I saved it, just gotta look for it. This blame is on Newsom & Karen Bass. No water, no warning, Bass leaves the country when the fires started. The same framework as Maui. Disgusting how the left won't talk about this. Trump warned him 3 times this would happen. A decent local news reporter asked Bass, and she stood there ignoring him at the airport looking down, no response or facial movement. This screams corruption. They let it burn. A local female citizen confronted him and said Biden was on the phone and that he was talking to him. The lady then ask can I talk to him and Newsom lies and says I have no cell phone service and that he can't get a hold of him. Newsom last week was questioned what happened to the $24Billion that was going to be used on the homeless. The money is gone and he has no answer. Come on!

The Earth will eventually reach a point where it will no longer be habitable, and by then, it will be too late.

Yes, I am a culprit too, as I’m not a ‘Go Green’ person. But the fact that these large corporations ask us to drink from paper straws to ‘save the environment’ is a joke.

No one is truly saving the planet. They only ‘appear’ to make green efforts, but in reality, it’s all for namesake, nothing more.

It will be humans messing around with weather seeding and diseases. Funny how the years go by, we start seeing the real motive. It will be evil politicians that will ruin humanity. People like Gates think they can play god with our weather system. This includes many other so-called elites. We shouldn't be messing with mother nature. Go look at other countries messing with the weather just so they get more rain. Iran on purpose makes it rain, and they have bragged about it. Google and other companies and Gates have patents on modifying our weather system. Sorry for the rant, but I'm tired of people not holding crooked politicians/elites accountable. 95% of fires are man-made, mostly homeless people in Cali. I'm done.

I have to wonder why the right always comes up with "its XXX's falut" and this comic fits the bill perfectly, IMO.

There's no science in associating Maui with the wildfires in CA. Are you even aware of what a Volcano is?

In case you are wondering, I know "Only Trump can fix anything and everything."

I can't wait to hear what those who voted for him (despite him being a pathological liar) think of his upcoming "fixes."

As I see it, Trump could say the Earth is Flat and all those who voted for him would believe him. 🤣

There is no critical "treshold, there is no CARBON emission that can affect the planet, everything else you see by these traitors are BS paid with money.

Go look into WATER EQUITY BELIEF water being shut off for 5 hrs by Kaleo in Maui. This is an obvious playbook. Go look up Equity belief in COVID. Go look up FEMA Equity belief. It's all on record and admitted. I have spent years connecting the dots.

UPDATE Sorry, I was wrong on the writer on Techspot about Aliens and global warming it wasn't written by (Midian182)

And clearly enough of the country believes he can fix some things, much more so than the last administration.

Using your same logic, the common reply of Trump potentially doing something actually beneficial, or some politician being caught in yet another lie - the answer is always, "..but... What about Trump?!"

Yeah, we'll excuse everything wrong with the current administration because.... Trump? Makes you sound like a 4th grader.

If this is a real problem, why are we allowing AI research to consume tons of electricity (which isn't always clean)? Let's ban AI as a part of Paris Agreement instead banning cars.
What? Banning AI as part of the Paris Agreement? That’s a bit extreme... While it’s true that AI research and data centers consume a significant amount of electricity, they also contribute to solving many global problems, including optimizing energy use, improving climate models, and even reducing emissions in other industries.

Cars on the other hand, are a direct, large-scale contributor to greenhouse gases and impact billions of people daily. Regulating AI and data centers to ensure they use cleaner energy is a better solution than outright banning AI.

I'm not a scientist, but it would probably help if there were less wildfires. Canada had a serious wild fire. I think the US did too. Drought and deforestation can't be helpful.

Are you serious? You counter this with random *** videos from Fox news and the internet. You get your "facts" from some problematic places.

Did you not see the video? Also, Fox has been right more than other news agencies. The point of the video isn't the news, it's about Karen Bass and Newsom. I don't use Fox news that much but the recorded video which LEFT news hides. I don't use their opinions, I gather all videos and make my conclusion, I'm showing that Fox news is the only one being honest. Funny Fox were the only ones that exposed the health of Biden, The laptop and voting corruption. LEFT news said Biden is healthy and at his A game. LEFT news said Trump is a Nazi lol. The border is "closed". There is "no" COVID lab in Reedley California.

Here is some of the stuff I have collected.

Enjoy.

It's amazing how strongly one can believe a theory when one only accepts the data that supports it and rejects any that does not. #science

Self-reinforcing social media bubbles don't help either.

Politicians:
"Must grow the economy"
So we need more people and more resources?

Also politicians:
"Must reverse the effects of climate change"
So, we need to use less people and less resources?

Their answer:
"We'll place tons of restrictions on people and what they can do in the coming years, whilst we carry on living the high life."

Fact is climate change means colder winters as well, I've noticed that lately too. When the fossil fuels we burn put emissions in the air and replace the moisture in the air there is less moisture to make the insulative cloud layer that we depend on to keep the temperature regulated normally. Most of the fossil fuels we burn are used for of course the production of electricity. Maybe more hydroelectric and nuclear plants might be in order but God knows what would happen by the environmentalists and anti-nuclear activists if you even mentioned that. Notwithstanding the Amish, you can't run the present day infrastructure of the United States by cutting firewood. This is supposed to be a technical journal so discussions of technologies to solve the problem should be addressed. The sad cold fact is you cannot have your cake and eat it too.
